Living Food

Discover the Health Benefits of Nutrient-Dense Microgreens

Growing up in my family, nutrition was naturally a big part of everyday life, primarily because of the constant influence of our two family businesses, Nature’s Way (from my dad’s side of the family) and Miller’s Honey (from my mom’s side). Both family businesses were geared entirely around wholistic health and wellness, and healthful substitutes for every day foods. Being raised in this atmosphere cultivated a strong love of alternative lifestyle medicine, and is where I attribute the majority of my initial curiosity toward wholistic health and wellness & lifestyle coaching.

I’ve always tried to apply the “good/better/best” mentality, constantly trying to seek out the very best, most nutrient-dense sources of living foods for health and vitality. Thanks to advancements in science, we now have more tangible evidence necessary to teach us about when certain foods are at their peak nutrient-density.

Slightly more mature than sprouts, and not quite the adult plant itself, “microgreens” are actually just the miniature version of the living foods you’ve (hopefully) already been enjoying your entire life. Microgreens are the baby version of the already massively nutrient-dense families of plants such as: sprouted grains, herbs, edible flowers, lettuces, leafy greens, various seeds, and vegetables of all kinds.

Aside from being robustly flavorful, vibrantly colorful, and refreshingly delicious, microgreens or babygreens naturally pack an intensely concentrated amount of the same vitamins, minerals, and nutrients found in their adult counterparts. From kale, beet greens, fennel, and rainbow chard, to basil, arugula, dark leaf lettuces, pea greens, and spicy radish, microgreens of all kinds provide anywhere from 40 to 70 times the potency and nutrient-density of specific vitamins, nutrients, and minerals, compared to the full-grown, adult versions! One bite of these “super-greens” is nutritionally equal to literally dozens of bites of the adult plants! Now there’s some food for thought!

Rather than having to wait weeks and even months to harvest certain veggies and plants, microgreens are harvested after as little as 4-10 days! And because of that, you can grow your own little trays right on your kitchen counter or windowsill! Srouting-trays of all kinds, such as those intended to duplicate a miniature greenhouse effect, are available through various stores online and shipped in a matter of days. Just some of the vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients most abundant in these colorful, little, power-packed, baby-greens are: A, B6, C, E, K, Beta-Carotene, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Lutein, natural probiotic enzymes, essential amino acids, and on, and on the list goes. A lot of these microgreens are even packed with up to 40% protein!

In today’s world of additives, dyes, pollutants, chemicals, carcinogens, and synthetic industrial compounds, our bodies could REALLY use a little help, even with just the daily clean-up of life as we know it. So, in the midst of all the seasonal cleaning you’ve already got goin’ on, do your infinitely valuable body a solid, (a massively nutrient-dense kind of solid), by choosing to eat more phytonutrient-wielding, cancer-fighting, health & vitality promoting, LIVING foods, such as microgreens. Your body truly will thank you in a million different ways, and hopefully, the next time it speaks to you (which it’s likely been trying to do for decades), you may be a little more inclined to stop what you’re doing, and simply listen…because it might actually be saying something you haven’t heard in a while, like “Thank you!”
